Early Training Sets Your Dog Up for Life

There is so much to do with puppies where do you start.

Socialisation isn't just exposure

Many people think socialisation means taking their puppy everywhere and letting them meet everyone. But quality matters more than quantity. What we want is for a puppy to have positive, calm experiences — not overwhelming or scary ones.

A puppy who is flooded with too much too soon will become more anxious not less. So the goal is gentle, gradual exposure to as many things as possible: different people, sounds, surfaces, environments, and animals. Exposure doesnt mean they have to interact they can observe if that is where they are comfortable. Let them take it at their pace not the pace of their siblings or your pace Watch for signs they're coping well — relaxed body, curiosity, willingness to take food.

Building confidence

Confidence comes from having positive experiences with a variety of things and learning that challenges can be solved. Little things like encouraging a puppy to step on a new surface, explore something unfamiliar, or work through a simple problem build a dog who can handle the unexpected.

This is one of the reasons I love tricks and agility foundations for young dogs. It's not about performance — it's about teaching a dog to try things, to think, and to find that engaging with you is rewarding and fun.

Relationship is everything

You can teach a dog a hundred behaviours, but if the relationship isn't there — if they don't genuinely enjoy working with you — it will always be harder than it should be. The early years are when relationships are built.

Spend time with your dog with the only goal is having fun and enjoying each others company. Play. Explore together. Let them make choices. Be someone they want to be near. This investment pays off for years.

Starting training right

Early training doesn't mean drilling commands. It means teaching your puppy that learning is safe, fun, positive, and worth their while. Short sessions less than a minute, lots of success, and rewards they actually care about. Frustration and force have no place here.

Keep it fun. Keep it easy. Have fun.

Getting support

If you have a new puppy or a young dog and you want to get started on the right foot, I'd love to work with you. In-person sessions are available in Hawke's Bay and Central Hawke's Bay, and online training means we can work together wherever you are

The early stages go fast. Make them count.
