Connecting with your dog changes everything and how to get it
Most people think training is about control.
But the truth is? The strongest, most well-behaved dogs aren’t controlled — they’re connected.
What does connection actually mean
Connection isn’t just affection or cuddles.
It’s when your dog:
Looks to you for guidance
Feels safe around you
Wants to engage with you over distractions
It’s a two-way relationship, not just obedience.
Signs you might be lacking connection
Your dog ignores you outside
Pulls on the lead constantly
Doesn’t respond unless you have food or a toy
Seems more interested in everything and everyone else
Your dog appears stubborn or to ignore you
This isn’t stubbornness — it’s a relationship gap.
Connection matters more than obedience
Because when you are connected with your dog:
Training is easier
Your dog wants to be with you so your come improves naturally
Anxiety reduces
Behaviour issues decrease
Your dog starts to work hard to work out what you want
Dogs don’t follow strangers — they follow those they trust.
How do you get connection
Have fun with your dog play with them and do things in a way they enjoy
Add in tiny short training moments regularly
Play WITH your dog, not just throw toys and be a bit silly
Reward engagement (eye contact, checking in)
Beware of how they are feeling- are they tired, do they feel safe
Consistency beats intensity every time.
The mistake most owners make
They jump straight into commands:
“Sit.” “Stay.” “Come.”
But without connection and joy, these are just words.
Connection gives those words meaning.
If your dog isn’t listening, it’s not about being stricter — it’s about being more connected.
If you’re ready to build that relationship properly, I can help.
