Mental stimulation games for dogs
If your adult dog seems restless, destructive, or constantly demanding attention, they might not need more exercise.
They might need more mental work.
Here are five simple mental stimulation exercises you can start today.
1. Scatter Feeding
Instead of feeding from a bowl, toss kibble across the lawn or floor.
Sniffing engages your dog’s brain and taps into natural instincts.
2. Short Trick Sessions
Spend 3–5 minutes refreshing basic cues or teaching a new one like “spin” or “touch.”
Keep it short. End on success.
3. Puzzle Toys or DIY Enrichment
Use food-dispensing toys or wrap treats in a towel and let them figure it out.
4. Hide and Seek
Hide somewhere in the house and call your dog. When they find you, reward calmly.
5. Place Training
Teach your dog to settle on a mat. This builds impulse control and calm behaviour.
Mental stimulation:
• Reduces destructive behaviour
• Improves focus
• Builds confidence
• Strengthens your bond
Start small. One activity per day is enough.
A mentally satisfied dog is a calmer dog.
